If you've seen the first episodes of Julian Fellowes' TV
mini-series
Titanic, (aka 'Downton-on-Sea') you might have
guessed that it is 100 years since the Titanic sank. Let's just say
that the 15 April anniversary is proving to be a bit of a big deal.
At the cinema, there's a 3D version (released on 6 April) of James
Cameron's 1990s box office behemoth - we saw a sneak preview and
it's completely amazing; the sheer enormity of the scale is
breathtaking. Meanwhile, exhibitions in both
Liverpool (30 March to 21 April,
2013) at the
Merseyside Maritime Museum and Belfast, where
the ill-fated trip began, explore the human loss and historic
remains. For those less amused by an interactive experience, myriad
books muse on the subject. We'd recommend
Titanic Lives:
Migrants and Millionaires, Conmen and Crew, a fascinating and
moving account of the personal stories by Richard Davenport-Hines
(HarperPress, £20).
