Author and travel writer Bruce Chatwin was the first to nickname his essential notebook his 'Moleskine' and complain in one of his novels that the nameless, small black notebooks that writers and artists had been using since the 19th century were no longer available, after the last supplier, a Parisian stationer, went out of business. In 1997 Milan based company Modo & Modo picked up on this and decided to reintroduce a range of notebooks, with the trademark name 'Moleskine.'
