Founded in 1935 after publisher Allen Lee interpreted a need for affordable, small paperbacks which would be easy to carry. Initial Penguin authors included Agatha Christie and Ernest Hemmingway; books were separated by colours so they could be easily distinguished - orange for fiction, blue for biography, and green for crime.
