The win of four medals at the 1936 games in Berlin by Jesse Owens was all the more poignant as Adolph Hitler attempted to ban black and Jewish athletes from competing. The worldwide fame that followed Owens trumped the Aryan agenda Hitler wanted to project (much to his annoyance, it's been said).
