Heat the oven to 180ºC (gas mark 4). Heat the oil in a large frying pan and sauté the potatoes for about 5 minutes. Transfer to a large lidded casserole dish.
Season the chicken pieces well with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Fry the chicken in the frying pan (adding a little extra oil, if needed) over a moderate heat, turning once until golden. Transfer chicken to the casserole.
Return the pan to the heat, add the sausages and cook until they start to colour. Add these to the casserole along with the garlic, thyme and lemon quarters.
Cover with a lid and cook in the oven for about 50-55 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked. Bring the casserole dish to the table and serve with a large green salad. Spoon over any of the juices from the bottom of the pan.
