Why Stockholm? This week sees the DVD
launch of the gripping film The Girl With the Dragon
Tattoo - the Hollywood adaptation of the cult-status Swedish
book, with Daniel Craig as the brooding Mikael Blomkvist and Rooney
Mara as the damaged yet brilliant Lisbeth Salander. David Fincher,
the American director, shot the remake of the original film on
location in Sweden's chicly bohemian capital Stockholm, a city that
continues to be a draw for Millenium Trilogy fans across the
globe.
The Millenium Tour: The city's museum
holds a fascinating tour for Millenium fans, guiding you in the
footsteps of Blomkvist and Salander along the cobbled streets of
the Södermalm district. The walk starts at Bellmansgatan, where
Mikael Blomkvist lives, past the tattoo parlour where Lisbeth gets
herself inked after a particularly horrifying scene, and onto
Stieg's favourite coffee shop. It's a must for any die-hard fans of
the chilling Steig Larsson trilogy.
Eating and drinking: No trip to
Stockholm is complete without regular pitstops for milky coffees
and huge, sugary cinnamon buns. The best place to sample this
morish delicacy is Café Saturnas, on Eriksbergsgatan 6.
What to do: Stockholm boasts some truly
awe inspiring museums, scattered around the many islands that make
up the city. Make a beeline for the city's glass-and-steel-clad Moderna
Museeet and don't miss the peerless photography museum,
the Fotografiska - which also has a great café
with views out over the water.
What to pack: Swedes will look at you
in horror if you're decked out in anything other than
weather-appropiate kit. This is not the place for kitten heels.
Chic Swedish women know how to look good in the wind and rain, so
follow their lead: sturdy books, warm coats and the ubiquitous
oversized scarf (yes, at all times of year)
The two-hour Millenium tour is held in English from October to May on Saturdays at 11.30 am; and from June to September on Wednesdays at 6 pm and on Saturdays at 11.30 am. Price: 120 SEK. Buy your ticket in advance at Ticnet.se.
