Out and aboutTake a day trip from Sausalito to see the huge redwoods at Muir Woods - a shuttle bus goes from the ferry port. If you're a cyclist, why not join the lovely folks at Bike and Roll who will rent you bikes and give you a guided tour. The $55 Bike the Golden Gate tour takes the Bay trail over the famous bridge from the city to Sausalito.
Eating and drinkingHomesick? Check out the Pelican Inn, a Tudor-style gastropub a short drive Muir Woods - not quite as British as it thinks it is, but cosy nonetheless. Wine buffs shouldn't miss the chance to visit Napa Valley and its many vineyards - The Napa Valley Wine Train is touristy but fun with the chance to sample tipples over a three course meal while watching wine country go by. The old-fashioned carriages are really cute, too.

On the roadMake like Jack Kerouac and take a road trip down to Big Sur - the coastal views on the way are to die for and you'll end up in a welcoming bohemian community who know how to throw a good party. We caught Rufus Wainwright performing an intimate gig at the Henry Miller Memorial Library - it's a stunning setting in a clearing in the woods which plays host to regular events.
