Location:Kenmare, Co. Kerry, Ireland.
What's the story:Being situated (appropriately enough) on Sheen Falls lends the grounds an air of gentle contemplation and wistfulness. The lodge is also an ideal base to explore the beauty spots of Kerry: Killarney National Park, the rugged Beara Peninsula and Torc Falls, to name a few. However, you don't even need to leave the grounds of the luxury hotel and spa to appreciate its stunning surroundings, as most rooms boast views of the eponymous falls and the Kenmare River.
Eating and drinking:The hotel's restaurant, La Cascade, offers elegant, formal dining with an innovative menu and emphasis on locally-produced ingredients, which has been recognised with Two Rosettes from the AA. The intimate dining room overlooking Sheen Falls is the perfect spot to celebrate a special occasion or enjoy a romantic evening. Sheen Falls Lodge excels at catering for everyone - literally - with great food also available in the more casual Restaurant Lounge and Oscar's Bar and Bistro, which are perfect for larger groups or families.
The spa:After a day of hiking, a calm option would be to relax in the spa's Jacuzzi, sauna and steam rooms, or 15 meter swimming pool. EL can personally recommend the 60-minute Aromessence Spa Relax - just one of the many beauty treatments on offer in the health club.
Why EL loves it:Visitors are made to feel completely looked after and indulged with every service you could think of. The rooms are traditionally furnished without being chintzy and EL's suite was a comfortable and luxurious retreat after a full day of rambling in the countryside.
Out and about:There's a huge range of activities on offer, which many guests specifically come to Sheen Falls Lodge to take advantage of: fishing, horse riding and clay pigeon shooting just to name a few. The local town, Kenmare, is nestled between winding valley and mountain roads, dotted with a number of breathtaking vantage points looking across the valleys. Kenmare has a number of friendly, atmospheric pubs which often have live music and chatty locals to make you feel welcome, while supping on a Guinness.
Getting there:Kenmare is a 50-minute drive from Kerry Airport which is serviced by daily flights from Gatwick and twice-weekly flights from Manchester. Alternatively, Cork airport is an 80-minute drive away.
