LocationAn 80 bedroom luxury hotel, minutes away from Moorgate and Liverpool Street stations. You're in the heart of the City and a hop, skip and a jump away from trendy Shoreditch.
Why goSouth Place is the first hotel from world famous restaurateurs D&D (Bluebird Chelsea, Floridita, Coq d'Argent) so you can expect the same cool Conran-designed interiors, slick contemporary touches and fantastic food as you find in their restaurants.
The roomRooms have a masculine edge, but in a good way; modern and sleek with statement furniture and some terrifyingly techy buttons, which we got the hang of eventually. Although clearly designed with the business traveller in mind (large desks, free wifi and a 40″ Bang & Olufsen flat screen tv), the rooms importantly still have soul. The beds are huge and incredibly comfortable and black out blinds covering the floor to ceiling windows are so effective you're in danger of sleeping through check-out without an alarm. Artwork by London-based artists, unique to each room, hangs above the bed, the mini bar is fully stocked with cool Brit brands like Sipsmith and the chic marble bathrooms house waterfall showers and vast baths, plenty big enough for two.
Eating and drinkingWith two restaurants and three bars, you really are spoilt for choice. If you're after a more civilised affair hit the elegant Angler fish restaurant on the top floor and tuck into the likes of yellow fin tuna tartare and lobster thermidore. More floor-to-ceiling windows reveal impressive views of the City skyline and a chi-chi pot planted roof terrace is guaranteed to be a hit come summertime. On the ground floor is the South Place Grill, a buzzy, brasserie-style restaurant with an imposing bar that draws in the post-work City crowds. If you're more in the mood for burgers or lobster mac 'n cheese and cocktails then settle in for the evening here; there's even a resident DJ to get you in the mood.
