What's the story: Town Hall Hotel has recently been restored by hotelier Peng Loh and offers 98 individually designed apartments and suites. An increasingly popular venue for various events, including weddings (it is a town hall, after all) the hotel itself is deep in the heart of hip, but not altogether glamorous Tower Hamlets, so fresh-faced travellers may wonder if they've taken a wrong turn. But rest assured east London chic is all about the contrast of back streets and beautiful spaces. Once you step inside the doors it feels as if you've been transported onto the set of movie. The art deco architecture, the furniture, the finishing touches all prove quite breathtaking. The hotel also boasts a swimming pool, spa and gym, but full marks for idiosyncrasity go to the option of hiring the hotel's pet goldfish for the night. Money goes to charity; you don't get lonely.

Eating and drinking: There's two restaurants; the smarter Viajante and more laid-back Corner Room, both run by the talented Portuguese chef Nuno Mendes.
Out and about: For out-of-town visitors, central London is just a few minutes away by tube. For the edgier crowd head to Shoreditch for plenty of bars, restaurants and after hours entertainment.

City Secret: Head to Dennis Severs' House in nearby Spitalfields. The artist made his 18th century house into a "living piece of art" where visitors are encouraged to travel back in time with the help of smells and sounds. The decor has featured in numerous fashion shoots, and is a dream for interior design lovers. Bonus: The sensational Spitalfields market is nearby.
